Here is a little information on how Reflexology can benefit women when trying to conceive, during pregnancy and after birth.

Fertility & Pre-Conception Reflexology

Reflexology has had many successes in treating couples with fertility issues, The Association of Reflexologists state that “… on average about 50% of clients seeking help through reflexology for infertility, find themselves pregnant within 6 months of commencing treatment.” (www.aor.org.uk). Reflexology is effective in assisting with different fertility issues, and can help with:

  • Natural conception
  • Treating conditions that impact fertility (e.g. PCOS, endometriosis or fibroids)
  • Treating diagnosed subfertility
  • Supporting assisted conception (e.g. ovary stimulating drugs, IUI, IUD, IVF and ICSI)
  • It can assist with conception by helping to reduce toxin levels, improve hormone and reproductive function, reduce stress and by generally balancing all bodily systems to create optimum conditions for conception.

Reflexology can form an integral part of a preconception care programme, along with exercise, a healthy diet and good nutrition, ensuring both parents are at their optimum health to conceive. Ideally a preconception programme and reflexology should commence four months prior to a planned conception.
The treatment I offer involves a holistic approach, working all areas of the body to encourage and promote balance, with an emphasis on relaxation and stress reduction. The endocrine and reproductive systems receive additional attention to help balance and promote their functioning. The techniques which I use have achieved great results and have helped many women with ovulation, regaining regular periods, easing menstrual symptoms, help with PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids, and early menopause and to achieve a viable pregnancy.

Pregnancy Reflexology

Pregnancy is one of the most special experiences that a woman can have in life but it can also be quite a taxing time, too. Hormonal changes occur quickly and dramatically, provoking an alteration in many physiological functions. Reflexology can help to restore balance in most of the cases, treating conditions symptomatically, alleviating and stimulating. These are a few examples of particular cases in which reflexology has demonstrated to be beneficial in pregnancy and as a preventive of serious conditions during labour:
  • Anaemia
  • Anxiety
  • Appetite regulation
  • Backache
  • Blood pressure regulation (except cases of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia)
  • Constipation or any change in bowel movement pattern
  • To prevent Diabetes caused by pregnancy (Gestational Diabetes)
  • Haemorroids
  • Insomnia
  • Muscular fatigue
  • Muscular tension
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Oedema
  • Urinary tract problems (difficulty to urinate, cystitis, etc)
  • To improve flexibility of pelvic floor

Postnatal Care

Following the birth of your baby, your body begins a new period of adjustment. Reflexology can be very beneficial for balancing the hormones which have been working so hard. It can help lift moods and boost the immune system. It can also assist with breast milk production and regulating sleep patterns.Your position can be adapted depending on your needs and baby can be with you during treatment. Techniques used can be varied depending on the kind of birth you experienced.Reflexology can be effective in assisting the body through recovery and can be beneficial for:

  • Lactation
  • Mastitis
  • Nipple tenderness
  • Aching joinst and muscles
  • After pains
  • Constipation
  • Haemorhoids
  • Headaches
  • Fatique
  • Postnatal depression

Of course there are no guarantees, as with any other medical intervention or therapy, but case studies have shown reflexology to be effective in helping the onset of labour and even to reduce time taken in labour.
